PRESENTATION
Welcome to Fermo, a beautiful medieval hilltop town, a few kilometres from the Adriatic Sea, in the splendid Marche Region. So you want to learn Italian, a veritable cornerstone of European literature and a necessary point of entry to understanding the extraordinary historical and cultural legacy that Italy has left to world civilisation.
The Ente Universitario del Fermano in association with the Foundation of the Cassa di Risparmio di Fermo, has organised an INTENSIVE ITALIAN COURSE FOR FOREIGNERS.

COURSE PROGRAMME
The course, to be held in the heart of Fermo, includes a total of 60 hours of lessons from 18 th August 2011to 2th September. It offers 4 full hours lessons each morning from Monday to Friday (9:00am- 1:00pm). It is divided into TWO LEVELS: Elementary and Intermediate. The Elementary level is aimed at absolute beginners (European levels A1, A2 and B1). The Intermediate level is for those students above that threshold (European levels B2, C1 and C2) and is also designed for students who already have a reasonably good knowledge of Italian. While learning Italian you will have the chance to appreciate the energy and refinement of what is often described as “the Italian style”: it’s a way of discovering what is new whilst enjoying the surprising vitality of old traditions in a lovely town near the seaside. Of course, you will be able to add your personal touch to how you learn and the way you spend your time, enjoying the experience with your fellow students or meeting local people.

TEACHING METHOD
This INTENSIVE ITALIAN COURSE will adopt a communicative approach, which is aimed at facilitating interactions in the various contexts of daily life and at making them more rewarding. A variety of resources will be employed, such as written texts, audio, video and multimedia material. It includes listening comprehension tasks, producing spoken language, and reading and understanding written texts about everyday life in the community. All teachers are Italian native speakers, they are graduates in foreign languages and literature and they have the relevant teaching experience.

GRANTS
This year we are offering 10 Study Grants which will cover all the costs listed below. Selection for grants will be made on the basis of university performance. If you wish to be considered for a grant, please fill in the appropriate section of the enrolment form specifying your current status (for undergraduates) your final result (for graduates). You will then make a legal declaration stating that the information is correct. You can access the online enrolment form at www.fermosummerschool.it.

INFORMAL LEARNING
EXCURSIONS AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES
The classroom teaching syllabus runs parallel with a full programme of afternoon excursions and cultural activities. Outings will place particular significance on the historical aspects of the city of Fermo and the surrounding area. You will be able to admire the historic palazzi, residential mansions and picturesque streets which still convey the industrious and culturally refined character of the local community. At the same time, you will also be able to get extraordinary views of the whole landscape spanning from the Adriatic to the Apennines. Fermo’s main square - Piazza del Popolo - is the heart of the town. It is surrounded by colonnaded buildings, marvellous 16th century mansions, like the Bishop’s Palace or the Palazzo dei Priori, now transformed into the town art gallery. A short walk will take you down to the Roman Reservoirs, one of the most unique architectural sites in Italy, which date back to the 1st century AD. At the top of the hill you will find the Duomo, with its asymmetrical Romanesque-Gothic façade. Excursions to the surrounding towns will take you along the valley of the river Aso, to the villages of Moresco and Monterubbiano, which both deserve a visit for their medieval churches and towers.

CULTURAL EXPERIENCES
FREE TIME AND WEEKEND OPPORTUNITIES
In your free time we highly recommend that you consider the summer programme of the majestic 18th century theatre. If you prefer sports or sunbathing, a 15-minute bus ride will take you to Lido di Fermo where you can enjoy the warm inviting waters of the Adriatic Sea and its wide sandy beaches. Or why not lose yourself on the numerous bicycle or walking tracks between the mountains and the sea? Fascinating cultural excursions are also planned for the weekends. One destination will be the breathtaking Grotte di Frasassi, one of the largest cave complexes in the whole of Europe. We will also offer trips to other historic towns like Rome, Florence, Venice, Ravenna, etc. according to demand.
